Othello Assignment #2

1. Do you believe that any of the characters from "Flowers in the Attic" resemble any of the characters from "Othello?" If yes, which character(s) and why/how?

Yes I believe that Corey from "Flowers in the Attic" resembles Desdemona from "Othello" because both of these characters died at the hands of someone who they thought loved them, the mother in Corey's case and Othello in Desdemona's case. In both of these works, I saw that Corey and Desdemona were supposed to represent the idea of innocence.

2. Which story do you think is more tragic? "Othello" or "Flowers in the Attic?" Do you consider both stories to be tragedies? Why or why not?

Both of these stories are tragic because in "Othello" Iago is successful in his attempt to blind Othello with jealously which ulitmately causes him to kill Desdemona, and in "Flowers in the Attic" because the mother is able to turn her back on her starving children and actually poison one of them causing him to die. If I were to choose though, I would say that "Flowers in the Attic" is the more tragic story because the mother lost all love for her children and tried to kill them so that she could obtain the family fortune.

3. Who was your favorite character in "Flowers in the Attic?" Why?

Hmm....I would say that either Corey or Christopher is my favorite character from "Flowers in the Attic." The reason for this would be that it was tragic how Corey died at such a young age because his mother turned her back on him and his siblings. Christopher could also as be considered my favorite character because he was the one who took care of his younger siblings after the death of his father.

4. Who was your favorite character in "Othello?" Why?

My favorite character from "Othello" was Othello himself. My reason for this is because he symbolizes that anybody is subject to corruption as is evident by the fact that he was manipulated by Iago to kill Desdemona and ruin his own reputation.
