Othello's Thesis

Seeing as how this is Shakespheare, I am guessing that this play involves tradegdy. Othello is probably a guy that loves a girl but in the end they cannot be together because of some problem. The point of Othello then is love should not be wasted.

Dr. Faustus Questions

1.       On page 1024 in the character list is a list of the 7 deadly sins. Get a general idea of what each of them are and tell/explain which you are most like to give in to.

Any one of the seven deadly sins is easy to give in to, but the one I am most likely to give in to is envy. This is probably due to the fact that I can easily get jealous of other's accomplishments despite being happy for them.

2.       What do you think of Faustus’ choice to turn from the church to magic?

I think that Faustus' choice is one that most humans would have trouble deciding whether or not to take. I could say that I would never take this choice but I would never know for sure because I have never been offered that much power.

3.       Dr. Faustus is seen as constantly struggling between good and evil, whether he wants to “convert” to the dark side with magic or to stay saintly and with God. What do you see as a struggle that you go through as 1) college students, and 2) fellow alive humans? (Hint: CHS students- the Honor Council topic is something that came into my mind when formulating this question, it’s a great topic!)

As a college student I go through the struggle of balancing school and life. The everlasting struggle of making sure that I finish my homework but still have time to talk to friends and do my hobbies. I do not face this problem much but as a human being the main struggle I face is the struggle of whether I should choose the right and just choice over the often quick and easy wrong choice.

4.       How do you think the movie relates to the book? What characteristics to you see between the Christopher Marlowe and the writers of the movie and what characteristics do you see between Dr. Faustus and Johnny Blaze (played by Nicholas Cage)?

The movie and the book related quite well. The concept of giving up your soul for some type of compensation in return whether it be magical powers or a father's life is the most obvious similarity that comes to mind.

5.       If you were in Dr. Faustus’ position, would you take the deal with the devil and save someone you love or would you lose the one you love and still have your “saintly figure?” What would it take for you to sell your soul to the devil, in context to the story?

If I were in Dr. Faustus' position, I would take the deal to save someone I love. I say this because if you do not anything worth dying for then you have nothing worth living for.

6.       EXTRA QUESTION: In response to my “rant,” what do you see as a problem in today’s society with bullying (i.e.-not enough being done to shed light to it, etc) and what can you do in your school and community to be a better advocate for the end of bullying?

In today's society, bullying is harder to prevent then it would have been back then. With the invention of the internet and cell phones it is nearly impossible to stop bullying but that is not an excuse not to try and prevent it from growing. The thing about bullying though is that it can last over a long period of time but all it takes is one act of bullying to hurt someone else's feelings.

My Character

My character for the pilgrimage to Disney World is a 19 year old boy named Harry. He is currently attending a community college in his hometown but dreams of so much more. Harry is an only child so his parents do let him go out much, and he has been home schooled his whole life so he knows little about the world outside of his hometown. He is a smart kid but lacks the social skills and street smarts to properly make friends and succeed in the world. He feels alone and left out at school until one day when he hears news of a pilgrimage to Disney World. It is not long before Harry decides that this pilgrimage might be his chance to get out of his hometown and learn more about the world, while making some lasting friendships.
